The Student Athlete Journey- Millie Congerton

Making the transition from England to the US isn’t always smooth sailing, but Millie Congerton has taken it all in her stride – whilst living the dream!

I recently caught up with Millie to chat about how she’s finding life at Delta State University as she approaches the end of her Junior season. Delta State is an NCAA Division 2 University in Cleveland, Mississippi.

Before going to America, Millie spent two years at Chelsea Blenheim who we’ve been partnered with over the past few years. Seeing her continue the development she was making at Blenheim is a real credit to the commitment she has put in, both on and off the field. As a graduate from Delta State myself, I was delighted when Millie accepted the offer to join DSU herself. It really has been amazing to follow her journey!

I put a few questions to Millie about her time there so far, and you can see her answers here –

How have you found life as a student-athlete? Have you been able to balance academics and Soccer?

So far, I’ve loved being a student-athlete! Finding the balance between academics and soccer was difficult at first, but I’ve managed to learn great time management. I’m never bored as there is always something to do – or get done! Finding time for social interaction is also important, and I feel that I’ve mastered planning my day to allow for some down time as well.

Did you find any major differences in your first year, compared to back home?

In the first year, what surprised me the most was the focus on athleticism. Don’t get me wrong, the level of the technical and tactical play is extremely impressive here, but what was even more impressive was how focussed teams are on being athletic and physically aggressive! I feel back home that there is a bigger focus on technical attributes, which was never my strongest point, so I do think that helped me fit into the style of play here.

Do you think you’ve developed on and off the field since being at Delta State?

The past three years have helped me grow and improve as a player, but also as a person. I’ve had to overcome many challenges – both on and off the field- and only through adversity do we really change and grow. I do think I am a better friend, daughter and player due to the experiences I have been given. As well as this, I’ve become more independent and better at managing my time.  I have also learnt the importance of having a support system and how to lean on, and find help in others!

Is there anything in particular that you think has contributed to you being able to thrive this season?

I think my determination, discipline and consistency has helped me thrive this season. Playing in College isn’t like rocking up to a game at home, it’s a lifestyle that you choose to live by every single day. You’ll likely play two games a week and practice almost every day, so there is no space for being inconsistent or not disciplined. I think that’s the most important part, the off season training. Whether it’s in the weight room, conditioning or even just connecting with your teammates and coaches – making the effort prepares you for the intensity during the season. I think I did a great job of this during the spring and summer this year!

What advice would you give to someone who is looking at pursuing the opportunity of earning a US Soccer scholarship?

Give it your all! When I first got here, like many, I was homesick and did question every decision I made. However, every decision I made led me to the biggest opportunity of my life – and I have no regrets. Take the jump, bet on yourself. Believe that you are deserving of the achieving a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!

(P.S – do your school work during the free time in the day. You will appreciate the free evenings more!)

Hearing Millie talk so highly about her experiences at Delta State gives me an overwhelming amount of pride, knowing that she is also living the dream there – just like I did. We’re excited to continue watching Millie thrive and follow the rest of her journey.

We hope this has given a good insight into Millie’s journey, and what life as a student-athlete is all about!
