There are so many different reasons why people consider going across to the U.S. Without doubt, getting to play at an elite level whilst also continuing your education is one of the biggest pulls, something that is hard to compare to anything else around the world.
I recently caught up with a few of our Athleticademix clients who are coming to the end of their career as a student-athlete, or have recently graduated, to get more of an idea as to why they chose to pursue this pathway themselves – as well as get a little insight into their experiences!
Hear from our Athletes..
Sophia Wickenden– Rogers State University (NCAA Division 2). Graduated in May 2025.
“I decided to go originally because it gave me the opportunity to play at a good level as well as earn a degree, which isn’t really available to do in England. It gave me the chance to experience a whole new way of living and gain my independence. It was always something that I was interested in doing. But the more I learnt about the scholarships, facilities and education available the easier the decision was for me. In terms of the people I met and the memories I made, it was amazing and I am thankful for that – as well as obviously earning a degree. I have now graduated with a bachelors degree in psychology and I am looking to go into teaching. I have moved back home and joined a new team for the upcoming season!”
Madi Hook- East Tennessee State University (NCAA Division 1). Graduates in December 2025.
“My experience in the States has truly been life-changing. Not only did I have the opportunity to play in a highly competitive league with consistent training and endless opportunities, but I also discovered my passion for nursing. I initially decided to come to the U.S. because I wanted to play at a high level and experience a new culture all while earning a degree at the same time. I’m now finishing my final semester of nursing school and will be graduating this December. My next steps aren’t completely set in stone, but I plan to begin a nurse residency program in February. I’m also hoping to continue my Soccer journey with my summer team, Georgia Impact, who are set to join the WPSL Pro League in Fall 2026!”
Brad Greene– St. Mary’s University (NCAA Division 2). Graduated in May 2025.
“College Soccer is a truly unique experience. There aren’t many other environments similar to College Soccer and the experiences I have made will stay with me forever. The beauty of College Soccer is forming lifelong friendships with people from all around the world, whilst being able to compete and play the sport we love. Travelling to new places, experiencing different cultures whilst also getting a degree. I was lucky enough to end up in San Antonio, in the great state of Texas. The 4 main reasons I chose San Antonio were – warm weather, big city, school focused on great education and top 25 ranked soccer program. St Mary’s and San Antonio have most definitely offered me all of that and way more. After the last 4 years of playing, I am now stepping into a Graduate Assistant/ GK coach role. For people who don’t understand this role, I’m part of the coaching staff whilst also continuing my studies at the graduate level. This was something I always wanted to do and it’s huge step for me in my coaching career. I’m looking forward to working with Athelticademix as a College Coach to now recruit the next generation of College Soccer players, and help them on their academic and soccer journey!”
Ella Tuplin- Cumberland University (NAIA). Graduated in May 2025.
“My four years at Cumberland University have truly been a dream come true. The experiences I’ve had, both on and off the field, have shaped me into a better person, and I’ll cherish those memories forever. Being able to play soccer every day while studying in the States is something special; it’s a feeling that’s hard to put into words, like living a dream every day. For now, I’m enjoying spending time at home, but I’m looking forward to returning after Christmas to begin my Master’s Degree, while being a Graduate Assistant.”
Dan Morgan- Brevard College (NCAA Division 3). Graduated in May 2025
“I chose to move to Brevard so that I could continue my education, and gain a degree, while also being able to continue my soccer career. I thoroughly enjoyed my time in America and I was able to make lots of friends from many different places around the world. I am now studying an MBA through Brevard College and hoping to graduate in May 2026.”
