What if I Get Injured While at College in the U.S.?

Getting injured is never part of the plan, especially when you’ve moved halfway across the world to play the sport you love. When I tore my ACL during my preseason in the U.S., I was scared, overwhelmed, and unsure of what would happen next. But what I quickly discovered was that the level of care, professionalism, and support within the college athletics system is truly exceptional.

1 week post op, rocking the crutches for gameday!

Now, at eleven weeks post-op, I can honestly say I feel incredibly supported. Every step of my recovery has been guided by experts who genuinely care; from my athletic trainers to my physical therapist, coaches, and teammates. I have rehab and treatment sessions on campus every single day, which makes recovery extremely accessible. Everything I need, from ice and strength sessions to mobility work and progress check-ins, is available right there in our athletic facilities. Even the team doctor visits campus weekly, so if I ever need to be reviewed or have questions about my progress, I don’t have to travel far or wait weeks for an appointment. That constant access to care has made a huge difference in both my recovery and peace of mind.

A QUICK COMPARISON

To put it into perspective, my sister also tore her ACL and had surgery just over a year ago in the UK. She’s not an athlete, but her recovery process looked completely different. She was only able to see a physiotherapist once a week and had to be driven to each appointment. Progress felt much slower simply because the resources weren’t as accessible. Comparing her experience to mine really made me appreciate how professional and athlete-focused the U.S. college system is. I can walk to my rehab every day, work one-on-one with specialists, and have ongoing communication between my trainers, surgeon, and doctors. It truly feels like an elite performance environment designed to help athletes recover efficiently and safely.

I was also really fortunate to have my mum visit during my surgery, which made the whole process much easier emotionally. Having family support during those early stages meant so much, but I’ve also realised that your “college family” steps up in big ways too. My trainers, coaches, and teammates have been amazing. They’re always checking in, encouraging me, and reminding me that I’m still a valued part of the team, even while I’m sidelined.

DO I NEED TO PAY MEDICAL COSTS?

Nope! As a student-athlete you are fully insured before taking part in any physical activity. All international students are required to have health insurance for everyday life in the states, this will be sorted prior to arriving. This can be covered in your scholarship package, but depends on each individual university and what they’re able to offer. If medical insurance is not covered in your offer, Athleticademix can help guide you to take out a seperate policy to cover yourself!

WHAT ABOUT MY SCHOLARSHIP?

It’s safe! Once your scholarship paperwork is finalised it cannot be reduced or cancelled if you get injured. Scholarship is renewed on a yearly basis. It would only face the possibility of being reduced if:

Coaches and compliance staff are happy to explain how these situations are handled, and its reassuring to know that injured athletes are typically treated with fairness and care.

IN SUMMARY

Looking back, I’ve realised that while an injury can feel like the end of the world at first, it’s also an opportunity to see just how much support truly surrounds you. The level of professionalism within U.S. college athletics is world-class! From the medical staff and facilities to the academic flexibility and emotional support systems. You’re not left to figure things out on your own; you’re guided by people who understand both the physical and mental side of recovery.

If you’re ever in this position, know that you’ll be taken care of. It’s okay to feel frustrated or scared at first, but you’ll also gain a new appreciation for the people and systems working behind the scenes. They will help you to return stronger, both as an athlete and as a person.
